How do you establish yourself as a trusted Etsy shop or brand, when you’re just getting started? Even if you’re confident in your design skills and have brilliant creative ideas, those will only bring you so far.

Lesson learned

Creativity and presentation skills don’t always go hand in hand. I still think back to my first assignment in a graphic design class in college. During a class critique of our initial concepts, I remember beaming as our professor praised my work and then proceeded to pin my sketches up on the board as an example for the rest of the class to follow. YES. I had this!

Fast forward to one week later when we presented our final pieces. Not only was mine not selected as a “shining example” but my work was criticized. Heavily. The design hadn’t changed, but my execution and presentation left much to be desired. My final grade on that project: C-.

That grade has stuck with me, as well as the lesson that presentation is EVERYTHING. It doesn’t matter how creative your concepts are. If you can’t showcase them in a way that’s appealing and professional, your audience won’t be able to see through to your beautiful work.

Confidence is the key to professionalism

Every time we decide to share a piece of our creative work, it can feel vulnerable. What if it’s not well received? What if it’s not good enough?

Great presentation is your way to combat those feelings and give you the confidence you need to put your work out into the world. When you make your Etsy shop look more professional, you become more professional.

Three strategies to make your Etsy shop look more professional

As you are working towards filling your Etsy shop, coming up with social media posts and designing pins to share on Pinterest, keep the following three tips in mind. They will give you the instant boost of professionalism to show your audience that you’re the real deal.

1. Keep it simple
.

Less is more. Remember that your work should be the focus, and anything that you’re showcasing it with has the potential to distract.

We all love those pretty flat-lay photos, but when there are too many objects in your Instagram post or in your shop listing, it can leave your buyer confused as to what you’re selling. Keep their eyes on your design, not on the stapler that appears in the photo with it.

2. Keep it consistent
.

It would be nice if we could all afford to hire brand strategists to ensure that we’re always putting forth a strong presence (a surefire way to make your Etsy shop look more professional). But when you’re just starting out, that’s not always possible.

Create your own strong brand, by simply keeping things consistent. Choose 2-3 colors and 2-3 fonts, and stick with those, whenever you present anything on social media or Pinterest.

In doing this, you’re not just establishing your voice, but you’re also simplifying your process. There’s no need to reinvent the wheel for every project. Find the style that works best for you and stick with it.

3. Look to the pros
.

Who are the designers and Etsy shop owners that you admire the most? What is it that draws you to their work, their brand, and presentation?

Make a note of the colors, styles, and language that they use to present their shop listings, social media posts, and pins. The key here isn’t to copy what they are doing but to copy the way they are doing it and then replicate it for your unique brand.

Chances are you’ve already followed one of these strategies, but now is the time to get more intentional. You’ve already put the work into creating your Etsy shop.
