If you have yet to fall in love with Broadway’s current phenomenon known as Hamilton the Musical, as I have, I highly encourage you to treat yourself to this true piece of art. Tickets are nearly impossible to get, but there’s so much to be enjoyed from the soundtrack alone.
With masterful lyrics set to a modern, dynamic score, it’s unlike anything I’ve ever heard— and it’s not just the creativity that has made an impact on me. The story of Alexander Hamilton’s transformation from immigrant orphan to founding father of the US is ridiculously inspiring in itself.
Lin-Manuel Miranda’s writing has literally given me chills, especially in listening to songs “My Shot,” “Satisfied” and “Non-Stop.” Another favorite is the song “The Schuyler Sisters” which contains a phrase that’s echoed throughout the entire show:
“Look around, look around at how lucky we are to be alive right now.”
That particular line has been playing on repeat both out of my speakers and in my head, and has been a continuous reminder to me of the opportunities that we have available to us— far more than those of our forefathers. Especially for Americans, today, July 4th is the perfect time to revel in possibility and remember that we all have an equal shot at creating a legacy.
