Money Saving Tip #8: DIY Decor

Table Numbers· Weddings

Today, we return to our money-saving series, with some tips to help you cut back on your decorating costs. Of all the tips that have been offered, this is the easiest to tackle yourself. If hiring a professional stylist or wedding planner just isn’t in your budget, there are lots of free resources available to help you create your dream atmosphere for your ceremony and reception. All of the images shown are projects that are DIY-friendly, so get inspired!

Dream big

Look for inspiration everywhere. Magazines, online forums, bridal shows, a friend’s weddings or your favorite guilty-pleasure wedding tv show are all great places to get beautiful decor ideas. Think about what suits your personality as a couple and what style best represents you. Some couples even choose a theme for their wedding, such as nautical, vintage, eco-friendly, or vineyard.  As you are gathering your ideas, you may want to create an inspiration binder or Pinterest board to keep all your beautiful imagery all in one place.

The look for less

Once you have rounded up your favorite ideas and looks for your wedding decor, you can begin a plan to bring your dreams into reality. Start shopping around for materials to create your own decorative elements like centerpieces, hanging lights, backdrops and favors. Look for free items like wine bottles, corks, cans, and jars that friends and family can help you hunt for. Craft, Thrift and Dollar stores should all be stops on your list as your hunt around for the best bargain. Don’t forget to check out online shops to purchase tools and paper supplies that may not be available in stores.

Get crafty

You’ve got your inspiration, you’ve got your materials and now it’s time to get to work! If you need help figuring out how to put everything together, the internet is filled with how-to guides. Pinterest and Craftsy are my favorite places for DIY tutorials. If you aren’t internet-savvy, you can ask for assistance from an associate in your local craft store (some even offer classes). Don’t be afraid to ask family and friends to help you out, if needed. Most of these projects are fun activities and you can make a day out of it. Remember that the small details will be what wow your guests, and make your celebration stand out from others. Doing it yourself (and with special people) adds an even greater meaning.
