My grandma always said, “Accept gifts gracefully.” I believe that kind words are a gift, and I try to give them frequently because I know how they can change a person’s whole day. When I do compliment people, though, I am reminded of my sister’s challenge to be specific in my compliments, rather than generic. Like this quote says, kind words are easy to speak and affect people in ways we may not even understand, but I believe their echoes are even more endless when the words are chosen specifically for that person. So rather than just saying, “You look great today,” I try to say something like, “That color brings out your eyes beautifully,” and I watch the receiver’s countenance brighten as the words sink in. – Janna Madsen
