Money Saving Tip #2: Be creative with your dress

Weddings

Be creative with your dress

The wedding dress is probably the most iconic symbol of a wedding. Many girls start planning and dreaming up what their gown will look like, 20 years before they walk down the aisle. To say that finding a perfect dress is important, would be an understatement.

Like many other counterparts to a wedding, your dress can be an expensive purchase. When you factor in the amount of time you will actually spend wearing it, it’s hard to wrap your mind around the amount you are spending. That being said, we are happy to present you with some creative ways to reduce the cost of your bridal gown, without compromising your vision:

Have your dress custom made

If you are willing to put in a little extra time and research, this option can give you a result that is beyond your expectations. The key to having a successful custom dress made is finding a good seamstress/dress maker at an affordable rate. The most cost effective way to work with a seamstress is to provide them with a pattern, as opposed to having them design something for you. Patterns can be purchased inexpensively from a craft store or online. Shop around to find the best prices for the fabric you are envisioning, as well as any embellishments. Your result: a beautiful gown designed to accentuate your body— and the best part is, it will be one-of-a-kind![divider]

Purchase a second-hand dress

This may make a lot of people cringe, but when you think about it, wearing a used gown is a very practical option. For one, you know for sure that any dress you purchase has not been worn for more than one day and that you won’t be compromised by it’s condition. This may be a great opportunity to find a designer dress that you thought was out of your price range, when you consider that you will be saving 30-90% by opting for a second-hand gown. You can also choose to purchase a used gown that is very simple and then have it altered and adapted to your liking![divider]

Attend a sample sale

This is a very popular option for brides-to-be. These sales take place a few times a year at many bridal shops and are an excellent way to purchase a designer gown, at the fraction of a cost (up to 70% off). The best part is, there is no waiting for your dress to arrive! Although it is very likely that you will need alterations, if you find a dress you fall in love with, you can be prepared to walk out of the store with it, that day.[divider]

Choose a simple dress

Keep in mind that the amount of fabric and embellishments will drive up the cost of your gown. If you select a dress that is free of beadwork or without a long train, you can expect to see savings. A simple dress does not have to mean compromising the detailing you may be envisioning. A plain dress can be used a base that can be enhanced by an embellished sash or a stunning necklace.[divider]

Search online

Do your research! Whether you are buying brand new or used, there are many ways to save money by purchasing your dress online. Dress stores and boutiques mark up their gowns, so they are able to make a profit. If you find a dress that you love, expand your search to stores around the country to see if you might be able to find it at a lower price than you were able to locally. Don’t forget to check out online boutiques for dresses on sale. If you are looking to buy a used dress online, Ebay and Craigstlist are great places to find deals.
